1:56:26 A main difference between Doug and Ted is that Doug wants to solve urgent, complex world problems by having big groups collaborating, while Ted cares more about accurately representing complexity, text and literature for the single individual. What they say themselves is that WW2 Doug uses hierarchy as a method of organizing things while counter-culture Ted is fundamentally opposed to hierarchy because the computer allows complexity to be accurately represented. From there, they both arrive at similar conclusions on what computers ought to do, but also maintain their differences in approach and focus. In my mind, there's no reason why we shouldn't have both and all of those worlds, not to mention the insights of other great visionaries that are completely off the radar unfortunately.

1:42:09 With the car, you have a pretty standardized, primitive interface for all of them and drivers probably don't need to consult the handbook when switching vehicles, but with software, interfaces and methodologies can change quite significantly. In an ever-increasing confrontation with complexity, people just don't have the time and capacity to learn all this specialized stuff. Who really wants to learn about the many interfaces of industrial machines, if there isn't payment or a production result as an incentive to do it? On the other hand, if you could apply your own, familiar ViewSpecs on different sources of data, not allowing the provider control over its presentation...

1:37:00 The benefit of bringing it all together would be spread among larger groups, so IF you do the work anyway, you could silo it and keep it for yourself and be a guy that makes billions of dollars off of it, so do really wonder why no guy is putting it all together in terms of the original vision?

1:34:22 So what do you think what questions technologists people ask, to have it on their tombstone? Do you think they care much about their bank balance in the end or is that potentially another kind of species?

1:31:58 That's not because they're "technologists" or only focus on technology, they're not there to make the world a better place at all, it's just plain business, and the (computer) field happened to be a somewhat lucrative one or a period of time.

1:30:48 The big question is: can we, individually or even collectively? Even if we can, there are reasons why we deliberately decide not to, what to do about those?

1:10:41 Well, it's probably needed to find out what the motivations and approaches are, that come out of deep personal values and experiences usually not explicitly expressed in a mission statement or task list so. This way, the group can get better at understanding why and how participants do the things they do.
